Literacy Council Gulf Coast (LCGC) has been improving the English language and reading skills of adults and children for over 30 years. Usually, students have limited ability to communicate, causing them to avoid getting involved in their community and pursuing job opportunities. Alex came to the United States nine years ago from Guatemala speaking a Mayan dialect called Kʼicheʼ and did not know how to read or write. He often found himself feeling lonely because the only other person who spoke his dialect here was his cousin.
Literacy Council Gulf Coast offers classes in English language and conversation, preparation for the GED and U.S. Citizenship test, computer literacy, and other focused subject areas.
Alex started coming to the Literacy Council Gulf Coast five years ago, and since then has learned how to speak English and Spanish, as well as how to read and write. It was not easy and at times he admits to feeling like giving up, but his amazing tutors encourage him to continue learning. The Literacy Council gave Alex more than literacy skills it also gave him a community. He has met people from many different places and has made friends from South America, Spain, Russia, and many other places.
Help Literacy Council Gulf Coast continue to be a welcoming opportunity for many.
The benefits of education and literacy are undeniable. Alex came to the United States for more opportunities and to fulfill his dreams of getting his G.E.D., going to college, and starting his own business. Alex is now only one year away from finishing his G.E.D. program, is planning on attending college for business or entrepreneurship, and has already embarked on his first business venture of selling bicycles online. The Literacy Council Gulf Coast has represented 62 countries and has helped almost 2,700 students. More than 500 volunteer tutors helped to make this happen for Alex and other students. We offer one-on-one and group classes that are all free of charge.
